How to art direct AI creative
September 26, 2026
Treat the model like a junior designer: briefs, references, constraints, and review — not magic keywords.
Art direction with AI is still art direction. You are responsible for what appears, why it fits the brand, and what ships.
Think in briefs, not prompts
A brief answers:
- Objective — awareness, conversion, launch, seasonal
- Audience — who should feel spoken to
- Single message — one takeaway
- Mandatory elements — product, logo, legal, offer
- Tone — see aesthetic breakdown below
Your prompt is the brief compressed into scene language.
Build a reference stack
| Layer | Example |
|---|---|
| Product truth | Packshot, SKU photo |
| Brand system | Site screenshot, palette, logo |
| Mood | Editorial tear sheet, film still |
| Anti-reference | "Not glossy tech brochure" |
IQON's brand kit captures aesthetic from your site at onboarding. Re-open Brand in project sidebar to align copy and visuals before generating.
Constrain what must not drift
- Logo placement zone ("lower third, 10% clear space")
- Palette anchors ("warm champagne gold accent, not yellow")
- Typography feel ("heavy sans headlines, generous whitespace")
Enrichment injects brand kit; you still spell out non-negotiables in the user prompt when launching a campaign.
Shot list for campaigns
Do not one-shot a whole campaign. Plan:
- Hero still (1:1 or 4:5)
- Story vertical (9:16)
- Talking head hook (video)
- Detail macro (texture / ingredient)
Generate each with the same brand context, different scene sentences.
Review like a CD, not a gambler
Score outputs:
- On-brand — palette, tone, audience fit
- Legible — product readable at phone size
- Distinct — not generic AI gloss
- Safe — no accidental likenesses or off-label claims
Reject and retry with a single directed change: " softer light, same composition."
Aesthetics are choices, not defaults
Generic AI looks like generic AI: over-HDR, random bokeh, sci-fi UI. Pick an aesthetic lane deliberately — editorial minimal, soft natural, bold graphic — and repeat its rules across assets.

When to leave the model
Composite logo in Figma. Add legal in After Effects. Color-grade final MP4. AI gets you 80%; art direction owns the last mile.
